Everyone understands what Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) relates to and it’s importance in understanding how it can effect uptime. However, if you are operating a Predictive Maintenance (PdM) regime and hence have ‘no’ failures how do you do comparisons? By using Mean Time Between Exception (MTBE), an ‘exception’ being created at the first indication of an onset of failure, you are able to define a statistic that is comparable with the rest of your assets and anyone else’s that have implemented MTBE as part of their PdM program. A good use of the MTBE is to be able to quickly see if you have any Bad Actors and the instigate an investigation to improve performance of such assets.
